The second teaser for her upcoming EP All Are Lost, electro-pop musician Valentina invites us to sit in a dreamy reflective space on her new song Deadweight. Within this space, Valentina reflects on darker times atop the mesmerising pulsation of keys and synths.
Italian-English artist Valentina is someone who has managed to remain relatively low-key, despite her vastly ranging and high-profile career. In the past, she has collaborated with prominent musicians such as Hot Chip and Kano. This new single is another glimpse into her upcoming EP All Are Lost, which releases on December 1st, the follow up to her 2021 EP Nature.

Deadweight
is a fascinating song, which is almost meditative by nature. The track begins purely with Valentina’s powerful vocals alongside an off-key, wobbly sounding synth loop. This gives space for reflection, in which we can fully ruminate on the lyrics, telling a story of sadness or darkness, but not wanting to pull a significant other into the darkness alongside you. By the chorus the track becomes more upbeat and hopeful, despite the lyrics: “Don’t wanna be your deadweight baby,” creating this interesting dichotomy between the subject matter and the dreamy, poppy instrumentation. The track sits on a line between being danceable and upbeat, and being more melancholic and meditative, but it never sits too long in one space.
This track is just another example of Valentina crafting her own unique and intriguing electro-pop identity. The way in which she tackles the genre with her rich vocals, and careful instrumentation, is perhaps a result of her wide-ranging experience she has developed during her career. Valentina seems like one of those musicians you can really trust, to consistently deliver powerful and meaningful music. After Deadweight, we are looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP.
