MTV and Umbro have teamed up to celebrate the pioneering eras of the late '80s and early '90s, paying tribute to acid house and '90s raves. The new collaboration “celebrates a time when working class kids, football fans, and students came together in disused warehouses, abandoned office blocks and country fields to rave together to a single unifying beat.”
During the late 1980s, football fans swarmed music venues replacing terrace culture for club culture, as a result, the early 1990s rave scene became a cultural phenomenon shaping the future of music, fashion, and youth culture. A new genderless uniform dominated the trend scene, baggy silhouettes, tracksuits, bomber jackets, and sweatshirts were all popular choices which allowed for freedom on the dance floor. Comfort was key.
Umbro and MTV pay homage to the early rave scene in a collaboration that nods to club culture, self-expression, and acid house, with plenty of vibrant colours, and in-your-face graphics. The new offering sees rave-inspired genderless silhouettes crafted with shell suit-inspired nylon, warped all-over checkerboard prints, and the fusion of Umbro and MTV logos. The collection includes coach jackets, football jerseys, track pants, graphic T-shirts, and a series of footwear and accessories, including bucket hats, caps, and the Copley “Checkerboard" sneaker.
The collaboration forms part of the existing Second Summer of Love collection. Taking back to their Manchester roots, Umbro tapped in Manchester-based band, Porij to star in the SS23 campaign imagery
