In less than a month, Tropikali Festival, the groundbreaking independent queer festival, returns to the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam. On June 28th and 29th, we'll head again to this industrial site transformed into a tropical paradise where music, diversity, and inclusivity come together, as we did last year when we visited this event for the first time. We told you in this article when sharing our impressions that Tropikali is an experience that must be lived at least once in a lifetime, and I am pretty sure everyone who has attended the festival would agree. You can get your tickets here.
In 2018, Diederik Broekhuizen and Nicola Rinaldi founded Tropikali with the mission of providing a platform for queer artists and under-represented music genres. Consolidating a safe space for the entire community over the past seven years with this interesting and necessary independent project, which emerged as a fusion of two Amsterdam queer parties, Rosario, focusing on Latin American and electronic music, and Kalinichta, which brought Balkan and Middle Eastern sounds to the capital, the festival moves away from the mainstream phenomenon and exorbitant prices by offering a safe haven where the queer community and their allies come together to celebrate diversity and be unapologetically themselves.
On June 28th and 29th, more than 40 artists will take the three stages to showcase their talent, their art and their way of seeing the world to the more than 5,000 attendees coming from all over the world. Tropikali has grown into an essential event in the national and international queer scene in recent years. Among this year's headliners are none other than Cormac, Doppelgang, Abby OMG, and Angel D'Lite. Additionally, impressive performances, including those by Envy Peru, will complete the festival experience.
One of the characteristics that best define Tropikali, besides the good energy, freedom, and diversity that permeate the atmosphere, is the mix of music genres, from the raw beats of Berlin to the uplifting rhythms of Rio de Janeiro and the mystical sounds of the Middle East. Presenting a dynamic mix of local and international artists from the queer and electronic music scene, Tropikali brings back the official afterparty Tropikali by Night. On Saturday, the celebration continues at Noorderlicht Café, where the Barcelona-based FLINTA collective Me Siento Extraña will host an exclusive takeover. Saturday will also feature Flinta Collective “The Planet”, who are doing their Secreto techno takeover. Onyx Unleashed, Miss Khristo, Djette Nanixa, Angelboy and Moxes are some of the names confirmed for the seventh edition's lineup, among many others.
