Renowned fashion photographer Tim Walker has brought his latest exhibition to life through a series of captivating photographs inspired by the works at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Titled Tim Walker: The Wonderful Things, the exhibition showcases his vast collection over nine exceptional photoshoots. In 2016, the museum invited Walker for an assignment, which has now resulted in this mesmerising display. The exhibition is currently ongoing at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles until August 20.
Walker rose to fame in the 1990s as a renowned photographer, drawing inspiration from fairy tales and adventures to produce dreamy and enchanting images. His love for the fantastical is evident in his work, which has been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, and i-D, among other publications, leaving an enduring impact on readers.
This fashion photographer is a multi-talented individual who has published seven books, and showcased his pieces in major museums. He has also ventured into the world of short films and music, collaborating with famous musicians and singers, earning global recognition for his contributions. Walker is known for his extravagant scenes and daring, goal-oriented narrative shoots in various locations worldwide. His partnerships with models and artists like Kate Moss and Tilda Swinton have been enduring, and he has even shot album art for Björk's Utopia (2017), Kate Bush's Director's Cut (2011), and Harry Styles' Fine Line (2019).
The exhibition has several sections, each with a unique theme. The Handle with Care section features a stunning Alexander McQueen gown and pays respect to the V&A's textile conservators. The Why not be Oneself? section showcases personal belongings of poet Edith Sitwell from the V&A's collection and has Tilda Swinton performing as the poet. The Pen and Ink section displays Aubrey Beardsley's erotic illustrations. The Illuminations section celebrates stained glass art with an array of colours.. The Lil' Dragon section showcases intricately decorated snuffboxes. Another captivating section named Out of the Woods showcases vibrant snapshots that take inspiration from two of the Getty's prized paintings. These dynamic shots are set to be displayed alongside Walker's latest creations.
The exhibition has a free programme called Fashion Forward: The Fantastical Visions of Tim Walker in which Walker, the curator Susanna Brown, and the editor of W Magazine Sara Moonves will have a panel talk on May 21 about Rodney Smith's work, a contemporary fashion and portrait photographer. Also, Getty publication's Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith will be released.
