By now, it’s impossible you haven’t heard about Christopher Nolan’s herculean task of adapting Homer’s poem, The Odyssey, for the silver screen. It’s one of the most anticipated releases of the year—coming to cinemas on 17 July—and, after a controversial first teaser, Universal Pictures has finally released a longer trailer. Family drama, treason, mythology, and power make up this epic story that has captivated humankind for almost thirty centuries through words and that now will continue to do so via cinema.
Such a colossal story (Odysseus embarking on a dangerous, years-long journey to reunite with his wife and son after the devastating Trojan War) needed an equally impressive cast: Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page come together to portray Odysseus, Penelope, Antinous, Calypso, Athena, and Telemachus, among others.
After the massive success of his 2023 film, Oppenheimer, Nolan aims to make history once again and continue to build a long-lasting legacy as one of the best filmmakers of the 21st century, with a filmography that includes Memento (2000), Inception (2010), and Interstellar (2014), to name a few.
