First came the creature of Frankenstein, then came his mate. The Bride! follows ‘the monster,’ played by silver-screen veteran Christian Bale, and his bride, Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who’s taken Hollywood by storm and has just won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for Hamnet, on a crime wave through 1930s Chicago. The story, written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, entangles romance, thriller, and social commentary into one film.
On the heels of Guillermo del Toro’s interpretation of Frankenstein this past year, The Bride! will offer quite a different perspective on the monster and incorporate the star of the show: his Bride. The original film depicting Frankenstein’s mate from 1935, Bride of Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, shows the woman ultimately rejecting the monster and being killed for doing so. This rendition, however, shows a murdered young woman revived by Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for the original creature. Her spunky and bold personality spurs a series of criminal cahoots between the two, ultimately calling the attention of the police. But their crimes are not random, uncontrollable acts of monsters; they are motivated by the corruption of the elite.
In the trailer, we get a taste of the spectacular dance numbers, impressive make-up, and spooky sets in store for us. At the end of the preview, the Bride yells out: “The dead have got something to say,” but we won’t know what until the film hits theatres on March 6th, 2026.
