It won’t be long before the last son of Krypton lands on the big screen. After all the hype generated by his first fantastic teaser trailer, followed by the jaw-dropping sneak peek presented at CinemaCon, we now get the official trailer. With it, we get a clearer idea of the story James Gunn wants to tell us — one that aims to make us believe again in THE superhero.
The trailer opens with Clark Kent giving an interview to his beloved Lois Lane —as Superman— addressing a major controversy: his apparent involvement in an armed conflict between the United States and another country. As the interview unfolds, we see Clark losing his composure, unable to understand why people don’t see that he simply did the right thing: stopping a war and saving lives. He doesn’t represent any country; he represents himself.
This conflict reveals several layers of the Superman Gunn wants to portray. Years ago, his iconic motto changed from “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” to “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” Lois also points out something significant: Superman is an immigrant who entered U.S. territory illegally. All signs point to this film having a strong political charge, with James Gunn putting the spotlight on themes that are deeply relevant and that loudly resonate in today’s world.
Later in the trailer, we get a broader look at what the film promises: lots of superheroes, villains, color, drama, humor… and Krypto the Superdog! The hype is sky-high. Everything indicates that DC is back in a big way. We can’t wait for July 11 to follow the film’s tagline and… look up.
