Anveshan is exploration, search, discovery. It is also the title of the second chapter in Charlotte Chowdhury’s narrative, an homage to Krishna Riboud, the celebrated historian who dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the textile arts of India. Drawing from both Riboud’s emotional legacy and her own Franco-Indian heritage, Chowdhury has just presented Rescha Paris’ Spring/Summer 2027 collection at the National Museum of Asian Arts in Paris.
There, amidst centuries of history, she invited guests into her own vision: a symbiotic dialogue between her designs and the traditional Indian sculptures inhabiting the museum’s galleries. Memory and modernity, heritage and intimacy, all coexisting within the same space.
To the hypnotic sound of a sitar, models styled by Jenn Abey drifted through the gallery. Silk cummerbunds, intricate embroideries and breathtaking silhouettes unfolded like a story. Shoes echoed the shape of traditional family bracelets, while hairpins, nose jewellery and brooches by Vanya Sundari completed the spell.
Bejewelled daggers cut through the collection’s translucency, embodying a delicate balance between strength and softness. Silk and muslin conveyed a sense of spirituality and serenity, while precision met sensuality in fluid silhouettes. Textiles became both the medium and the message: a tangible expression of the journey suggested by the collection’s title.
Drawing directly from Mughal miniature paintings, natural shades of beige, brown and stone grey created a serene backdrop against vibrant touches of pink, orange, green and yellow. An emerald-green dress adorned with vivid floral motifs shimmered like reflected water, while a pale-yellow look hinted at the silhouette of a traditional salwar kameez through a distinctly contemporary lens. A bride closed the show with a sheer, ethereal tunic whose lightness gave it the appearance of an ancestral spirit floating through the museum halls. A South Asian treasure perfectly at home among the treasures that surrounded it.
