Immerse yourself into a pictorial rainforest, a vividly green and ochre rich forestry painted by French artist Pierre Seinturier at his solo show Centralia, on view until February 16 at Galerie Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois in Paris.
Centralia is a town in Pennsylvania (United States) “abandoned after a fire in a strip mine took hold and has continued to burn, beneath the borough, for several decades. This devastated place serves as the departure point of Pierre Seinturier’s imagination to invite us into a fantasy setting which, like a visual oxymoron, is nothing but a contrario luxuriance and greenery”, reads the exhibition text by the curator Bethsabée Attali.
Also hugely inspired by his past years at the École des Arts Décoratifs, the French artist’s work focuses on plants, prints, and how to represent them beyond the canvas. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by canvases – both hanging on the walls and standing on the floor as sculptures – and totemic artworks resembling cut tree trunks, which turn the venue into a sort of installation. As Attali points out, “Through this exhibition, the artist makes us once again experience a journey into a fanciful and timeless universe of step with all the properties of contemporary painting”.
