You’ve probably heard that Mexico City is the place to be right now. And yes, that is true, but its forward-thinking cultural scene isn’t precisely new. A clear example is that Mutek México is celebrating its 20th edition this year. From October 7 to 20, an array of trailblazing artists like Daito Manabe, Amnesia Scanner & Freeka Tet, METAL 50 cover star Sega Bodega, Alva Noto, David August or Martin Messier, among others, will take to the city to show their multidisciplinary practices bridging music, technology, sound art, and audiovisual creation.
First of all, happy birthday, Mutek México! Twenty years have flown by, but the festival’s original idea of championing artists that use technology to broaden the limits of creativity is more current than ever. In an increasingly technology-led society, artists exploring its creative possibilities are more necessary than ever. In the past two decades, things have changed quite radically, and the first confirmations of the program reflect precisely that. We can find names that have shaped Mutek’s identity throughout the years like Alva Noto, Daito Manabe, and Robert Lippok paired with creatives from the new global avant-garde such as Nick León & Ezra Miller, Daniela Huerta & Natalia Escobar as Koaxula, or Animistic Beliefs.
In the words of the festival, this line-up is “the result of twenty years of experimenting with formats, locations, and collaborations along with the relentless search for artists and projects that continue to revolutionise what is possible to express through machines, technology and creativity.” Delving into the program, we find DjRum’s debut in the country, as well as David August’s much-awaited act, a transmedia performance developed especially for the location in which it will be presented. There will also be immersive experiences and interactive installations by artists like Spime.Im, Iregular, Ali Phi, or Boris Acket, among others.
This is just the first batch of confirmed artists for this very special celebration, but soon there will be more. So stay tuned and, if you’re already convinced, you can get your tickets and 360 passports here
