Brace yourself for an epic year for cinema! 2026 will see the likes of Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Alejandro González Iñárritu back on the big screen, new instalments for beloved sagas like Toy Story, Scream and The Hunger Games, and adaptations of novels like Wuthering Heights and Project Hail Mary. From sci-fi to romance to horror, comedy, and drama, the silver screen will showcase, once again, stories so captivating that you won’t be able to take your eyes off of them.
Wuthering Heights
The first renowned premiere is the new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights, a classic of romantic drama that arrives on the big screen on 13th February, just before Valentine's Day. On this occasion, it comes from director Emerald Fennell, who already caused a stir with her latest work, Saltburn, and continues to do so with this very particular adaptation, featuring a cast that includes Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. As if that weren’t enough, Charli xcx signs the soundtrack of this feature film with an album that will be published the day after the release.
Scream 7
After various controversies, dismissals, and the resignation of actress Jenna Ortega, who was to be one of the protagonists of the film, one of the most famous and successful horror film franchises of the last decades returns to the big screen with Scream 7 on the 27th February. The director of the new sequel, Kevin Williamson, and the protagonist Neve Campbell give one more twist to this horror saga with the most famous killer of all, Ghostface.
The Bride!
After the success of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, it seems that the new film directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal could not arrive at a better moment. In this new movie, which will be released on 6th March, we see the other side of the coin: the overwhelming loneliness suffered by Victor Frankenstein’s Creature, portrayed by Christian Bale, makes him cry out for a partner, here played by the Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley. And although the starting point is the same as the original (Chicago in the 30s), this new twist seems to approach closer to film noir and action. The cast is completed by a stellar list of names including Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Project Hail Mary
The first dose of science fiction of the year arrives on 20th March with the cinematic adaptation of the novel Project Hail Mary, by the American writer Andy Weir, and directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord. As in every apocalyptic dystopia, a cataclysm looms that threatens to destroy the Earth, and someone must save the planet in a heroic manner (in this case, Ryan Gosling). On this occasion, it will not be a meteorite or an alien invasion, but the Sun, which is dying.
The Drama
The Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli, who has gifted the world such unclassifiable titles as Dream Scenario and Sick of Myself, signs the script and direction of this film produced by A24 and starring two actors of the moment, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, which lands in cinemas on 3rd April. The trailer, which has just come out, reveals that the couple must overcome a crisis a few days before their wedding due to an unexpected revelation.
Mother Mary
American producer and director David Lowery brings us this story about fame and friendship on the 24th April. A psychological drama about the toxic relationship between a singer (Anne Hathaway, who sings on the big screen again after winning an Oscar for Les Misérables) and a famous fashion designer (Michaela Coel) who had been friends but whose life paths separated in a complex manner.
The Devil Wears Prada 2
Perhaps this comedy is one of the most awaited releases of 2026. Twenty years after the first instalment, on 1st May returns this semi-comedy that immerses us fully in the world of fashion, more specifically, that of historic print publications, which, from what the trailer predicts, are in decline. Interpreted again by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, now we will see what has changed and what has remained the same.
Disclosure Day
Steven Spielberg returns to the big screen with the cinematic genre that made him a legend, science fiction. This feature film, which will be released on 12th June, is based on an original story by Spielberg himself and poses the possibility of not being alone in the universe and throws us the question: if it were true that we are not alone, would you be scared? Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, and Colman Domingo, it is the return of the director after The Fabelmans (2022), and he returns to trust in his favourite composer, John Williams, for the soundtrack.
Toy Story 5
Disney returns on 19th June with the fifth instalment of one of its most beloved and celebrated classics, Toy Story. Adapting to the current times, the film introduces new technologies and screens to its universe, until now populated by ‘traditional’ toys like Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang. Now, they will have to compete with a screen and demonstrate that they can be more reliable than a chip and blue light.
The Odyssey
The story of The Odyssey, one of the classics of literature that still survives thousands of years later, is widely known: Before being able to reunite with his beloved Penelope, Ulysses will have to overcome gods and mythological creatures. This is what the new film by Christopher Nolan, which will be released on 17th July, presents. For the occasion, the British filmmaker adapts this epic history alongside a stellar cast: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, amongst others.
Digger
One of the most brilliant directors of the moment, Alejandro González Iñárritu, brings us this feature film that promises to be “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” With Tom Cruise as the main star, in this movie, which will be released in October, the most powerful man in the world causes a disaster and embarks on a mission to demonstrate that, in reality, he is the saviour of humankind.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
On 20th November arrives a new instalment of The Hunger Games. Francis Lawrence returns to direct the sixth film of this dystopian science fiction saga in which Panem is explored twenty-four years before Katniss’s story. The film begins on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates. Starring Joseph Zada in the lead role, the film promises adventures, action, tension, and limitless emotion.
