Brace yourselves, cinephiles, because the new trailer for Mickey 17 is here! The new movie by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Mother, Okja, The Host) strays away from the director’s usual focus on contemporary issues like poverty and classism, social prejudices, criminality, or family relationships, and instead takes us to a not-so-distant future where robots look like humans and our species has started to colonise outer space. With a stellar cast led by Robert Pattinson and including Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun, it is one of the most anticipated films of 2025. Take a look!
For the first time in his career, Bong Joon-ho leaves the more serious, intense tone at the door and gives comedy an opportunity—as strange as it may sound. But after watching his career and growth over the past twenty years, we’re confident he’ll make the most out of it. A cast as great as his, though, always helps, especially with Robert Pattinson. It’s not the first time he’s ‘spent time’ on a spaceship—remember his role in Claire Denis’ High Life. This time though, he embodies Mickey, a robot that volunteers to become ‘an expendable’, meaning that scientists will use him time and time again to make progress on colonising other planets. As we see in the trailer, he accepts his faith and is content with dying multiple times because, after his death, his body is printed again. Until, one day, he finds out he’s not the only Mickey out there. And that’s where the action starts.
As thrilling as it seems, we’ll have to wait a few months for Mickey 17 to hit our nearest theatres, more specifically, January 2025. But in the meantime, we can enjoy the funny approach to sci-fi and an excellent BSO consisting of Frank Sinatra’s songs.
