First teased out on Twitter in September, as he tweeted “I’m comin’ to fuck shit up,” Kid Cudi finally brought his debut collection to the Paris showroom earlier this month. Set to launch in 2023, snippets of his enigmatic new clothing line Members of the Rage were first delivered to his fans around a year ago by way of a limited edition four hundred dollar t-shirt realise with Human Made for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.
Members of the Rage (MOTR) was finally disclosed in full during Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2023 on January 20. Inside the stylish showroom, invitees were encouraged to try on the garments in order to explore the collection first-hand. The collection is deeply personal and shaped by Mescudi’s own taste and experiences around fashion, music and other creative pursuits such as his recent animated film-music project, Entergalactic. The collection embraces vibrant colours and combines “'90s grunge with the soul of hip hop and elements from a distant future.”
References of different outfits we’ve seen him wear over the past years, intentional or not, are present as well as influences from fellow peers in the fashion industry such as Matthew M. Williams, Eli Russel Linnaz (ERL), Tomoaki Nagao (BAPE) and notably, the late-Virgil Abloh are present throughout the collection. Going beyond ready-to-wear, Cudi wants to position MOTR as a full-grown luxury label. In an interview with Hypebeast, he shared how Abloh was one of the first to believe in him and his new endeavour, “I talked to Virgil about it and he was like, ‘Yeah, you should.’ My boy supported me. He thinks it’d be a great idea. And that’s kind of like all you really need… a mentor who says, ‘You have it. You’re a style guy.’ That’s what Virgil used to say.”
