The fashion world gasped when last year’s Venice Film Festival released their official selection programme. A title that instantly grabbed everyone’s attention was Marc by Sofia. Just a couple of names — a filmmaker and her subject. But these two names aren’t just random: they’re Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola. Teaming up to offer a unique glimpse into the brilliant mind of the American designer, this new documentary is coming to cinemas on March 27th, and today, we finally get to watch the official trailer.
Since the 1990s, Marc Jacobs has been a household name in the world of fashion in particular, and culture at large. He’s created a visual language, a universe, and also an empire thanks to his namesake brand, but also, he was at the helm of Louis Vuitton for sixteen years (from 1997 to 2013) and has launched a younger brand focused on Gen Z, Heavn. He’s a force to be reckoned with, and this documentary does just that.
From going shopping with his grandmother, which he cites as a major influence on his interest in fashion, to giving insights into what being a creative director means, to discussing frustrated dreams (like becoming a theatre director), Marc Jacobs lays it bare. Charismatic, genius, playful, with a hint of rebellious — he’s the designer behind emblematic looks like Winona Ryder,’s and Courtney Love’s trials in the 1990s, to the Louis Vuitton nurses from Spring/Summer 2008. After cementing himself as one of the greatest creatives of his generation, Sofia Coppola’s new documentary, produced by A24, will also allow us to get to know the person behind the character.
