Indonesian alternative pop-rock trio Manja, based in Bali, returns with their most introspective single yet, Wax & Feathers, a different sound after their latest and more energetic release My Oh My, a show off of their range and ability to work equally well with different styles and concepts. A very personal track inspired by lead vocalist James Sukadana’s past struggles with mental health, the universality of this topic and how easily the public can relate to it makes it a song that is not only enjoyable to listen to but also useful and helpful when it comes to talking about and confronting such matters through an artistic path; one that always results in self-discovery and, hopefully, healing.
Just the song title lets us know about the fragility and rawness behind it, and when learning the context, we know we are in front of a deeply personal piece. “My wax has melted, my feather is coming off, and it’s my time to fall” was the note left by James to his sister during his darkest time, and from there on a physical journey and emotional journey started, first in Australia, where darkness still shaded his mind, and ended in Bali, where a fresh start and the motivation to work on this song were waiting for him.
With his husky and warm voice, the nostalgic and uplifting instrumental by brothers Nick Pratama on guitar and keyboardist Mark Saputra, and the folk chants at the back that are always chilling to listen to, the single transmits this sense of realisation and coming to terms with the nature of life. “I know now I was wrong. Lights fade, but fires burn along. I see now this is right where I belong,” they sing. Paired with an equally emotional video where the band performs at the top of a mountain, giving us a stunning view of the beauty present on our planet, there is no doubt that spirits will lift with Wax & Feathers.
