Since 2012, the biennial art exhibition Made in L.A. has been showing the most ground-breaking art produced only in the L.A. region, giving attention to under-recognized and/or rising local talents. Brought by the Hammer Museum, this year's edition has been taken care of by one of the museum's own curators, Aram Moshayedi, and the Director of Education and Associate Curator for the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Hamza Walker.
For the occasion, they haven't chosen an specific theme. Instead, Made in L.A.: a the, though, only is celebrating diversity in the different disciplines (dance, fashion, literature, music, film and performance, and more) of the participants and their birthplaces: Lebanon, Colombia, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil and Australia, to mention a few.
For instance, the very subtitle of the exhibition is a commissioned poem that englobes the whole vibe by minimalist writer Aram Saroyan: “a, the, though, only.” Another key element will be the performance by artist Todd Gray, who will wear his late friend's clothes (The Doors’ keyboardist Ray Manzarek) on his day to day during the whole exhibition. The 26 artists participating will also be eligible for the Mohn awards, given by philanthropists and art collectors Jarl and Pamela Mohn.
Los Angeles is without a doubt one of the most prolific and energetic art communities in the world and, thanks to the fine selection of the curators, the assistants will be able to presence all the collected works that will give a clear insight on what's happening in L.A's creative practices nowadays. Definitely not to be missed.
