Alexis Lucena hides behind the stage name LEXXE, a multidisciplinary artist from Long Island, New York. If she sounds familiar, it's because she has the single Labyrinth, which got over 100.000 listeners in less than a week. With a background in ballet and classical music, she's been performing from a young age and brings that expertise into her art, especially with her debut album, A Haunted House, now streaming everywhere.
Over the summer she’s been releasing easter eggs to give us an idea of what the album would sound like; the singles that gave us a glimpse are Disco Witch, Labyrinth, and Queen of the Night. These eerie melodies, influenced by electronic and dance music and packed with synths, show Lexxe’s mastery of taking us to pop’s darker side. The artist shows that the spooky and the enchanting can come together and be enjoyed, and this project is proof—an unforgettable entry into the electro-pop genre.
“I wrote a poem last year that started with 'A haunted house is where dead things go to live,’ and it kept coming up in sessions, so I knew that was the concept for the album.” She wanted to be the queen of this season, and she succeeded. Tracks like I Know by Experience That the Poets Are Right sound like the beginning of a horror movie, while Procession brings out the album's emotional side, where she leaves the electronic music aside and focusses on expressing her feelings, and Room With a View follows it—the kind of song that tells a story of intrigue and excitement in the language of hyperpop but surprises with more emotional lyrics, proving that even witches cry. Who Is She! and the closing track All Black Mansion round out the album with sharp vocals and detailed production, making A Haunted House the perfect spooky season soundtrack.
The album is a collection of all the phases we go through but don’t remember—stored in our minds and awakened by fear, chasing us until we learn to handle those emotions. A Haunted House explores everything that haunts the artist, bringing it to life in a real and visual way.
