The fashion world was shocked when one of the industry’s heavyweights, Véronique Nichanian, announced her departure from Hermès after being in the Maison for thirty-seven years — the longest running creative director inside a house in the last decades, especially in today’s fast-paced world. But it was also understandable that after almost forty years at the helm, she wanted to step back and finally enjoy some free time. But the world is today even more shocked that Hermès has handpicked independent designer Grace Wales Bonner to become the new Menswear Creative Director, hinting at a totally new direction.
“I am very happy to welcome Grace into our family of artistic directors,” said Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas in a press release. “Her contemporary vision of fashion, craftsmanship, and culture will continue to shape the style of Hermès men’s ready-to-wear, confidently blending her perspective on the times with the house’s heritage. Grace’s taste and curiosity for artistic practice strongly resonate with Hermès’ creative approach. This is only the beginning of a dialogue that will continue to grow,” he concluded.
“I am deeply honoured,” added Wales Bonner. “Beginning this new chapter and joining such a lineage of artisans and creators is a dream for me. I express my sincere gratitude to Axel Dumas and Pierre-Alexis Dumas for giving me the opportunity to bring my vision to this truly magical house.” It’s also notable to say that her first collection for the house won’t be unveiled until January of 2027, meaning that Hermès expects the designer to first delve into the Maison’s archives, become familiar with their ateliers and ways of working, and become confident enough to deliver a strong enough collection.
