Grace Kay
Reclaiming Herself

After her 2023 debut album, Grace’s Gospel, singer-songwriter Grace Kay has been enjoying the rewards of working so hard on an LP. But you can’t stop an artist from creating, and now she’s back with Actress, her newest single, out today. The Los Angeles-based singer’s latest track is an electrifying pop anthem that bridges a catchy melody with honest lyrics about reclaiming personal power.
Have you ever tried to change yourself too much for someone else? Felt like you were just trying to adapt to each other, but it was only you? After realising you’ve been wronged, you feel betrayed, like they’ve played with you, which is understandable. Grace Kay has you because she’s experienced just the same. In Actress, a cheeky title referring to that side of yourself that tries to put the best face forward, she sings: “Girl meets boy it’s the same every time / Fit into your puzzle when you don’t fit in mine / We play the roles again / I follow.” Same old, same old.
Speaking of her new single, the LA-based artist shares: “The theme of Actress is how I moulded and transformed myself into someone I didn’t recognise; someone that would fit perfectly into ‘this guy’s’ life. Throwing away my own sense of self was the deadliest weapon used against my mind in my 20s, and being on the other side of it now, I have the clarity to recognise it.” We’ve normalised to do such stuff for love, but we shouldn’t, and that’s why voices like Kay’s are important to keep reminding us that we mustn’t lose who we are for anybody.
