The journey of life exists in cycles: growth and decay, fertility and aging, tradition and expansion. And this delicate balance between these ever-present elements of our world continues to evolve. Huxley-Parlour’s latest exhibition, Flora’s Cloak, on view through September 3 in their Wiltshire space, explores these relationships, including works by artists Xanthe Burdett, Molly Greene, Nettle Grellier, Jane Hayes Greenwood, Laila Tara H, Anousha Payne, Bryan Rogers, and Lian Zhang.
This exhibition aims to situate the body within reality. The title of the collection is named after Gluck’s 1923 painting, Flora’s Cloak, in which the Roman goddess of flowers and spring floats above a landscape, flowered cloak flowing behind her. This piece sets the scene for the exhibition as a whole, emphasising the natural world and its coexistence within humans.
Key themes of this group show are exuded through a connection between the bodily and the environment. Artists Grellier and Burdett showcase this intersection directly, as their works highlight the inseparable quality of human and nature. Other artists like Payne and Zhang contort the body in their works, refuting any sense of utopia and bridging worlds between human and animal.
Reshaping our world, Flora’s Cloak aims to shift our thinking away from the hierarchy and towards the rhythmic, as the pattern of death and resurgence persists through space and time.
The exhibition Flora’s Cloak is on view through September 3 at Huxley-Parlour, Mildenhall, Marlborough, SNN8 2LW, Wiltshire (UK).
