Everything is pink. Then it is purple. Then somehow even more pink. FLO’s Audi arrives in a haze of fluorescent colour, its aggressively saturated palette pushing the video somewhere between a car commercial, a nightclub hallucination and a very expensive fever dream. Reality is still there, technically, but it has been turned up until it barely recognises itself.
The premise is deliciously simple: FLO wants an Audi. The desire is played for laughs, but there is something familiar underneath it. “You have something, already you want the next thing” FLO says. In the song, that impulse becomes an increasingly ridiculous fantasy of the “big fat Audi”; on screen, it becomes a red Nissan tearing through the Ugandan landscape, surrounded by colour that seems determined to outshine the sun.
FLO filmed the video for the single Need an Audi with a drift driver from Kampala, spending a day with friends racing and drifting through the jungle near Lake Victoria. The footage carries some of that spontaneity. Tyres throw dust into the air, the car swings sideways and the camera follows the movement with a looseness that keeps the fantasy grounded in the physical world. The result is playful, messy and gloriously excessive.
That sense of experimentation runs through FLO’s music, too. The Kampala-based DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist and trumpet player first began working with Nyege Nyege after meeting Jonathan “HHY” Saldanha while playing with a reggae band. Their collaborations eventually grew into HHY & The Kampala Unit, while FLO’s own forthcoming debut, NAKATO, moves between gqom, dancehall, hyperpop, ballroom, trap, R&B and electro-metal. The LP releases on Hakuna Kulala, an imprint of Nyege Nyege, 19 October.
Audi gives that genre-hopping instinct a visual language. Pink bleeds into purple; bodies, cars and landscapes become part of the same oversaturated dream. Luxury gets dragged into the jungle and sent spinning through.
