If club music has a hidden side, Curses is its finest archaeologist. With his Next Wave Acid Punx series, the Berlin DJ and musician has unearthed treasures that once gleamed in the shadows of the underground, surrounded by haunting synthesisers and basslines that rumble through your very core.
Now, in a new wave of sonic excavation, he flings open the vaults of electronica to resurrect four forgotten tracks, revamped with surgical precision for the dancefloor. “Together these four tracks revisit a moment in club land when the rules of what defined different genres in club music were still being written.” Alongside him, the talented Stockholm Syndrome from Melbourne and Andi from New York bring their musical scalpel to breathe fresh life into these tracks. The exclusive premiere of Curses' revamp of Deborah Sasson’s (Carmen) Danger In Her Eyes will be released as part of Next Wave Acid Punx Revamps via Eskimo Recordings on February 6th. We’ve already had the chance to hear it… and it's ready to set the night on fire.
Curses kicks off his sonic surgery with Deborah Sasson's Danger In Her Eyes, an eighties enigma where opera and synthesisers join hands in an unlikely alliance. With his unmistakable dark touch, the Berlin-based artist brings the drama back to life, transforming it into an anthem ready to dominate the most exclusive booths. Next up is House Fatale by J.W.B. Hits The Beat, an explosive cocktail of electro and house that was already a force in the '80s, and now, under Curses' baton, it’s been recharged to accelerate the pulse and intensify its punch for the most demanding night owls. “There was this pivotal moment where all genres were still evolving, figuring out what sounds would eventually become staple elements of one another.” A time when anything was possible, where trance, EBM, house, and electro intertwined without boundaries. “There was this naive, innocent, and punk approach. You’ve got trance arpeggios, those heavy snares of early EBM, chopped vocals in the style of early Chicago and NY formative house music, all mixed with electro-funk and percussive Latin freestyle grooves.”
Stockholm Syndrome and Andi are right on their heels. The former reimagines Voyou's Houseman, rescuing its '80s vibe and sharpening it with a punch of raw power. Meanwhile, Andi takes Not Leaving Without Jerry to more aggressive territories, zeroing in on its staccato rhythm and giving it a hypnotic, unstoppable edge. “A time when we were dancing without boundaries. It is a huge pleasure to team up with NYC Synthicide founder Andi, whose DJ skills and production go unmatched in the world of wave and synth, and Melbourne, Australia’s heavy electro EBM baron, Stockholm Syndrome, was the cherry on top. Both artists bring a timeless attitude and energy with their edits of these club hits, matching and elevating the ethos of what Next Wave Acid Punx stands for.” Together, this EP is more than just a collection of reworks; it's a statement of intent. No empty nostalgia here, just electronic history rewritten with a forward-thinking twist. Ready to dive into this synth storm?
