Yorgos Lanthimos is on a roll. The Greek filmmaker has been quite prolific post-pandemic, and this year he’s back with a new movie: Bugonia. A very personal remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet! (2003), Lanthimos’ new feature film follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. “How can you tell she’s an alien?,” one asks with a hint of doubt in the newly released trailer. “Well, the signs are obvious,” the other replies confidently.
Once again, Yorgos Lanthimos teams up with one of his favourite actresses, Emma Stone, with which he’s worked in the Oscar-winning Poor Things (2023) and The Favourite (2018), as well as other celebrated titles like Kinds of Kindness (2024). She’ll be joined by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis as the kidnappers, and the rest of the cast is completed by Alicia Silverstone, Stavros Halkias, Marc T. Lewis, and others.
The new trailer, out today via Focus Features, shows that the Greek director is back to his awkward tone, blending irony, humour, and science fiction seamlessly. The movie is expected to come out in cinemas this upcoming October, so stay tuned for an exact release date.
