Fashion doesn't stop when the big four are done; the calendar expands way further in all directions of the globe, and for experience, we are aware of how intriguing and interesting proposals can often be found in corners of the world not very talked about. Our destination soon will be Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan, a country in Central Asia with a unique fashion industry and creative talent who is eager to let the world know about them. We are also eager to learn about them, and for this, we spoke with Bauyrzhan Shadibekov, the director of Visa Fashion Week Almaty, just days before the big week they've been preparing for for a long time, who gives us insight into the tenth edition of the most important fashion event in the region.
“We help designers become better, give them clear global guidelines, and at the same time contribute to the fact that fashion labels declare themselves loudly in the international market,” reads the press release for the upcoming edition of Visa Fashion Week Almaty, and just by that quote, we know this will be an event where the creativity will be overflowing. Having the support of an event that not only gives a platform but also encourages and provides help when needed is extremely important for any designer or brand that wants to have a successful and long lasting career, and that's one of the philosophies the Kazakh fashion industry takes pride in.
The event that will take place from October 16th to the 18th at Luxhall in Almaty is new to us, so who better to ask about some details and guidance of the fashion scene on this side of the world than Bauyrzhan Shadibekov? CEO and producer of the Fashion Week, Bauyrzhan knows this event more than anyone and shares with us the expectations, goals, and core values that we will soon be able to witness firsthand.

Hi Bauyrzhan! It’s a pleasure talking to you! The days are passing by, and fashion week is getting closer and closer. How are you feeling? Is everything ready?
It’s always an exciting time as fashion week approaches. The entire team and I have been working tirelessly to ensure everything is perfect. We're incredibly excited and are looking forward to showcasing all the work that has gone into this event. I truly appreciate the time you're taking to speak with me and for your interest in our journey.
We’re very much looking forward to it; it will be Metal’s first time at your fashion week! Tell me, what can we expect? You are experienced in the fashion industry; what do you find different or memorable about Visa Fashion Week Almaty?
I’m thrilled that Metal Magazine will be part of the event for the first time! Visa Fashion Week Almaty stands out as a unique platform that highlights the diversity and creativity of Central Asia. You can expect an incredible mix of cultures and influences, where modern trends meet traditional craftsmanship.
What makes Visa Fashion Week Almaty truly special is its role as a gateway for emerging designers to showcase their talent on an international stage. The event also brings together global industry professionals, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and innovation. The energy of the city, the passion of the designers, and the distinctive fusion of local heritage with global fashion trends make each show truly unforgettable. It’s more than just a fashion week—it’s a celebration of cultural exchange and artistic expression.
Is there anything you think we should pay special attention to when it comes to the shows and the creations? Some details or elements you think are key to understanding what you are all about?
Yes, one of the most important aspects to focus on is how each designer integrates elements of our regional identity into their work. Central Asia is rich in history, and you’ll see that reflected in the textiles, techniques, and even the stories behind each collection. Pay attention to how traditional designs are reimagined in contemporary ways.
Congratulations on your 10th edition! It's an important and pretty number to celebrate! How has been the pace of growth of the fashion week as it has gone by? Has it been a road of highs and lows, or, on the contrary, has it been a steady one?
Thank you! It’s been an incredible journey. Like any large-scale project, there have been both challenges and victories. The growth of the fashion week has been organic but consistent. Each year we learn more, attract new talent, and improve the experience for both designers and the audience. We’ve definitely had some highs and lows, but overall, it has been a rewarding experience seeing the event evolve into a major cultural platform.
What’s especially exciting is how the event has grown in international recognition. Each year, we invite more and more media from different countries, which has helped expand the visibility of both the event and the designers who participate. We’ve also seen an increasing number of designers from other countries join our lineup, bringing diverse perspectives and styles to the runway. The audience itself has become more global, with fashion enthusiasts, industry experts, and guests travelling from various parts of the world to be part of Visa Fashion Week Almaty.

How is the state of the fashion industry here in Kazakhstan? I'm curious about the opportunities, the curiosity, and the care for fashion on this side of the world.
The fashion industry in Kazakhstan is growing rapidly. There is a real hunger for innovation and self-expression, especially among young designers. We are at a point where local designers are not only creating for domestic markets but are also gaining international recognition. Opportunities are expanding, and the curiosity for fashion is stronger than ever, which is very exciting.
There’s a phrase in the press release that caught my attention: “We help designers become better.” It's a very nice goal. In your opinion and from your experience, what do designers need in order for them to be able to improve?
When I see the growing number of talented and creative young designers, it truly inspires and brings joy. We launched a contest for them—the Next Designer Award. Empowered by Visa, and it's already yielding results. Every season, we discover new names and talents, and it’s incredibly motivating. This contest is a great opportunity for young designers to make a name for themselves and step onto the international stage. In order for designers to improve, they need a few key things. First and foremost, mentorship—mentors help young professionals structure their ideas and further develop their creative thinking. It’s also crucial for them to have opportunities to showcase their work. Our project has become an international platform, and every designer who participates has the chance to present their creations to a wide audience, both in Kazakhstan and abroad.
The support of our partners plays a vital role as well. Thanks to Visa, which shares our passion for industry development, we are able to offer exceptional opportunities for our designers. This contribution is a significant step toward the growth and prosperity of the fashion industry in Kazakhstan. Access to resources, such as innovative technologies and international connections, is essential for young designers to reach new heights.
You’re the creator of the Next Designer Award. Empowered by Visa, a very valuable initiative to support and encourage young talent within the context of fashion week. How has been the response to this ever since you created it? How is the future of fashion shaping in Kazakhstan in the hands of these young designers?
The response has been incredibly positive. The project has provided a platform for many emerging talents, allowing them to showcase their creativity and gain wider recognition in the industry. This initiative has been instrumental in helping young designers gain visibility and grow their professional networks. The future of fashion in Kazakhstan is bright because these young designers are bringing fresh ideas and perspectives. They are not afraid to experiment and push boundaries, which is exactly what the industry needs to evolve.
This event is meant to highlight the industry not only of Kazakhstan but also of Central Asia, including shows by creators from Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia. How is the process of curation of the international participants of the fashion week? What are you looking for outside Kazakhstan?
When selecting international participants, we look for designers who bring something fresh and different to the table but also share a connection to the cultural richness of the region. We want to showcase the creativity of the entire Central Asian region, so we choose designers whose work resonates with the audience on an international scale while still reflecting the heritage and contemporary issues of their respective countries.

Do you feel more global eyes on you with each year that passes? Does the effort you and the team put into organising such an event translate into a visible reward for the industry and its creators?
Absolutely. Each year, we notice more international attention and interest, not only from the media but also from global fashion buyers and influencers. The work we do is starting to pay off, as more designers are getting the exposure and opportunities they deserve. It’s gratifying to see how the event is contributing to the growth of the industry and the recognition of Central Asian designers on the global stage.
The description of this year's edition is very beautiful and very intriguing: “Each new collection embodies the beauty and mystery of nature, creating unique images that beckon with their ephemerality and depth.” Can you explain to me a little bit about what's behind this?
This year’s edition merges the mysteries of nature with modern innovation. Each collection captures beauty, ephemerality, and depth, transforming fashion into an art form that reveals the secrets of light and shadow, movement and stillness. Designers will present collections that explore new concepts inspired by the natural world. Over three days, attendees will experience fashion shows, interactive installations, and light performances that blend reality and fantasy, creating a space for discovery and wonder.
There’s a mention of technology as well; how prominent is the interest of the local designers towards the new innovative ways and tools of creation?
Technology is becoming increasingly important in the work of our local designers. Many are incorporating innovations such as digital design and sustainable production methods into their processes. They are interested in how technology can not only make their designs more efficient but also more impactful in terms of storytelling and sustainability.
As Bauyrzhan the spectator, not Bauyrzhan the director, what would you be happy to see on the runway this season? Some trend or concept that would excite you.
As a spectator, I always look for authenticity and innovation. This season, I would love to see designs that challenge the traditional norms of fashion while staying true to the cultural roots of the region. I’m also excited to see more sustainability-driven concepts, as this is becoming a vital part of the global fashion conversation.
How would you like us to feel after the fashion week is over? What would you feel satisfied with when reading the reviews?
I would like the audience to leave feeling inspired and with a deeper understanding of the creative talents. If the reviews highlight the diversity, innovation, and cultural richness of the designers, I will be satisfied. More importantly, I hope people walk away with a sense of connection—to the art, to the region, and to the stories behind each collection.
