Nicholas Aburn has just made his debut at Area during New York Fashion Week. With high expectations surrounding him, he marks the beginning of a new era for the brand, and what better way to start than with a collection built around celebration?
Earlier this year, Aburn was named creative director of Area, stepping into the role at a time when the brand was looking to evolve its identity. Known for its bold, glamorous, and highly theatrical designs, Area has built a reputation for turning sequins, metallics, and statement embellishments into artful storytelling. Aburn’s appointment signals a fresh perspective, blending the brand’s signature extravagance with his own sensibility for wearable, modern fashion, while maintaining the celebratory, party-ready spirit the label is known for.
Aburn transformed daily-wear basics like hoodies, leggings, blazers, and even sequinned football jerseys into party-ready pieces. The collection reimagined everyday items: slashed denim appeared in multiple variations, and a gown constructed from jeans turned the legs into a skirt shaped like a massive, rigid bow. While some looks were playful and theatrical, others offered surprisingly wearable options, bridging spectacle with practicality. Oversized tailoring, streetwear elements, and casual silhouettes balanced the more dramatic pieces, giving the collection energy and accessibility. Beyond tailoring, the strongest moments came from the gowns. Crystal and sequin embellishments were presented in wearable ways. Also, the confetti-inspired dresses evoked celebration and optimism, and as the press release said, “What if the confetti never stops falling? Even if it's over, I'm ready.”
