Imagine stopping for petrol and unexpectedly meeting someone who ends up changing your life. It might sound like the beginning of a romantic film, but for Andy Tongren, it’s also the perfect starting point for a song. The Young Rising Sons frontman returns today with lucky me lucky you, his new solo single and first release of the year, accompanied by a music video filmed by Tyler Hansen.
“It’s about that feeling when you meet someone and, for whatever reason, it feels like you’ve known them your whole life,” Tongren explains. The song has been almost a year in the making, at least as far as his audience is concerned. What began with a few snippets shared online gradually attracted listeners who connected with it long before they could hear the full version. And now that it’s finally out, those who have been following its development can discover the complete story.
Optimism has always played an important role in Tongren’s music. As the frontman of Young Rising Sons, he first caught the industry’s attention with the band’s debut single, High, which led to a deal with Interscope Records. Since then, the group has accumulated over 225 million streams and shared stages with artists including The 1975, Weezer, Bleachers and Halsey. Now based in Nashville, he’s been developing his solo career while maintaining that ability to turn personal experiences into songs people can recognise themselves in.
“I’ve been teasing it for almost a year now, so finally getting to share the whole thing with everyone feels pretty surreal,” Tongren admits. There’s something fitting about a song celebrating unexpected connections finding its own audience before its official release. And perhaps that’s the nicest part of this story: what started as a personal reflection on meeting the right person has already become meaningful to people he’s never met.
