After his debut album Also This Will Change, which earned him the prestigious Spellemann Award for Electronic Music Record of the Year, Niilas presents Pyromid, a homage to his indigenous Sámi heritage and the captivating Arctic aesthetics of his homeland. This single, which will be out tomorrow but that you can pre-order here, explores the convergence of electronic music and folk fusion, inviting listeners to close their eyes and embark on an ethereal journey to the frosty peaks of Norway’s mountains.
The song begins with a dancey beat, featuring Norway’s national instrument, the Hardanger-fiddle. This traditional gem takes the spotlight, leading the way on our musical journey. As the music progresses, it layers in organic percussion and an edgy acid-sounding synth bass. Niilas has collaborated with folk musicians from both Norway and Iran in order to create this piece, which exemplifies the artist’s commitment to musical experimentation.
Niilas himself explains: “I’ve tried to completely let go of my own expectations and, instead, let the immense changes that the world is going through impact my creative direction. Sort of letting the music river run through me”. Pyromid is a testament to Niilas’ artistic evolution and his profound connection to his roots. It offers an enchanting blend of tradition and innovation, suitable for both the dance floor or a shamanic initiation.
