This is going to be a busy and thrilling year for K-pop fans, especially because three Blackpink members are going solo — Lisa, Rosé, and Jennie. It’s the latter that we’re talking about today. A couple of days ago, Jennie released (totally unannounced) the music video of Zen, directed by the brilliant Cho Gi-Seok, right after announcing her debut album, Ruby, out on March 7th. Watch it now!
Bridging technology and nature, past and present, the music video of Zen is as beautiful as it gets. Jennie has a star quality that’s undeniable, and she eats the choreographies, the looks, as well as the many characters she embodies — but as she concludes in the song, “Can’t be two of one.” Her eclectic style, hypnotising gaze, and badass attitude are some of the pillars on which Zen stands tall. The visuals, made by Korean photographer and filmmaker Cho Gi-Seok, are otherworldly and help us get into the mood that Jennie is conveying — high-energy yet sensual, goddess-like yet contained.
This new single comes just three days after the artist announced her debut solo album on social media. Wearing a vibrant red wig, she took to YouTube and Instagram to present Ruby, the title of her upcoming LP, where she’ll be collaborating in different tracks with industry heavyweights like Doechii, Kali Uchis, Dua Lipa, Childish Gambino, Dominik Fike, and FKJ. And last but not least, she’ll be presenting the album live on three exclusive dates: March 6th in Los Angeles, March 10th in New York City, and March 15th in Seoul.
