Copenhagen-based multidisciplinary artist Martin Jon Hasfeldt continues to blur the boundaries between sound and space with his latest single, Rest of My Life, released on the rising label Real Live. A master of juxtaposition, the artist crafts a track that feels simultaneously familiar and otherworldly, evoking a sense of nostalgia that is both comforting and disorienting.
From the outset, a barely audible human voice creates a sense of arrival, as though stepping into an empty space where something profound has already begun. The breakbeats enter gently, pushing forward with off kilter energy, while a mournful and ethereal vocal sample drifts through the mix like a distant memory. The rhythmic foundation shifts fluidly, what begins as a floating haze locks into a lounge-style 4/4 beat, carrying a sense of longing but also subtle optimism. It’s a song that acknowledges the weight of the past but still reaches toward something brighter.
The accompanying music video, created by Julie Koldby, brings this emotional depth into a visual language. An unknown dancer moves almost without sense through an empty hall, captured through jittery, almost voyeuristic camera work. Their movements mirror the track’s structure — urgent and restless, then exhausted and still. At one point, the dancer collapses, catching their breath as the music strips down to its core, allowing the listener a brief moment of clarity to recollect before the sweeping synths reclaim everything. In this moment, the viewer and the dancer are aligned breathing in sync, caught between past and future.
With Rest of My Life, Hasfeldt offers more than a song; he delivers an experience. It’s a deeply atmospheric, emotionally charged piece that lingers long after the final note fades.
