After having released their debut EP, Don’t Buy Me Flowers, in 2023 and having positioned themselves as a notable force in Copenhagen’s underground scene, alga is back to drop their first release this year. The Copenhagen/Berlin-based duo composed of songwriter Birdie and producer Gabe now presents their new double single, Go0dnight/Filthy, which combines dreamy artpop with pulsating club energy. Having proved to create nuanced soundscapes that take listeners on a journey through highly stimulating life experiences, the duo continues to work to make a name for themselves in today’s music scene.
“Go0dnight is an introspective dive into the threshold between manic joy and deep melancholy. The song was inspired by a close friend living with mental illness, hiding her internal struggles behind a fast-paced lifestyle. It’s a tribute to the complex realities people navigate every day,” Birdie tells us when we ask her about the starting point and meaning of this single, which addresses a difficult reality that many can relate to. The stories that inspire their music are closely connected to the reality of current society, sharing very personal stories based on their own experiences or their inner circle.
In Filthy, the singer goes back in time to reflect on boundaries and respect within the nightlife scene. “Inspired by my own early experiences clubbing as a teenager and the film Promising Young Woman, the song feels like a catharsis, as it tells the story of a universal experience,” she adds about this second single, which channels pure energy with its pulsating, industrial production. Their musical path has just begun, but in a very short time they have built a solid identity by creating experimental electronica, blending hyperpop and trip-hop-inspired sounds.
