Life is about contrasts: life and death, day and night, good and evil, love and heartbreak. In their new song, Ajii and Wé Ani encapsule this dichotomy perfectly — speaking of a failed relationship, something dramatic and sad, over a Jersey club type of beat that gives the track an energising aura. Released today, February 14th (just in time for Valentine’s), Forget About You will get stuck in your head all weekend long. Check it out!
“Forget About You is a deeply personal song for me, one that captures the battle between chasing my dreams and letting go of someone who once meant everything. In my verse, I reflect on how the grind and ambition have taken over, but there’s still that emptiness — the memories of when things felt simple and real,” says Ajii about the meaning behind his latest track. Even if he speaks from the heart, this experience is so universal that he wanted another artist to join in — and Wé Ani was the perfect choice.
Just like Ajii, she’s participated in the widely acclaimed American Idol contest, having been a top five finalist. She’s also been a runner up on Season 11 of The Voice. Naturally, when Ajii proposed to join forces in a song about having a broken heart, she didn’t hesitate. “The day after a breakup is truly the worst because you’re just waiting to not feel or remember anything about the relationship,” she says. “It’s heavy and heartbreaking. I promise that was not the thought I had going into the session with Ajii though! We were bouncing around ideas when Alex played this Jersey club type beat. Ajii and I looked at each other like ‘YOOO!’ The juxtaposition between the sad reality of a breakup and the upbeat rhythm really catches you, so we ran with it.”
Certainly, the upbeat rhythm and output of the song make it easy to vibe with. It’s enjoyable, danceable, and puts you in a good mood. It’s only when you pay attention to the lyrics, which mix feelings like regret, not having enough patience, hope and also despair, that it truly gets to you.
